aaaahhh I don’t know how to respond to this but I love you?

À La Volonté du Peuple from the original French concept album? because that has different lyrics than this but it is so good oh my god like the English version is good but I listen to that version and I feel so empowered

Are we free or determined?

hi I hope you’re okay? um I don’t really know how to answer this

I just looked up free or determined because I didn’t know what it meant and my understanding is you want to know if we have free will or if everything has already been caused/decided by prior actions going back forever so basically is destiny a thing? And I’m really not sure! I think about that a lot actually and it’s a really hard question. We’ve been talking about fate a lot in my mythology class and there are a lot of things to consider like if we try to make our own choices are we just making the prophecies come true even as we try to avoid them? In the Iliad for example the gods and the human soldiers take their sides and try to turn the tide of the battle but ultimately they have to submit to fate because the end of the war has already been decided. And in Oedipus Rex, Oedipus leaves home to avoid his destiny and ends up in a place he never would have gone otherwise and ends up fulfilling the prophecy. In the myths they have prophecies and gods and stuff so they know their fate, and it’s a question of can they change it, but for us it’s more complicated because we have no way of knowing if we’re playing into some pre-existing plan or if every action is unpredictable and our own choice. Personally I think that either every single moment and action is determined or nothing at all is, no in between, if that makes sense, like some people think that the general important events are determined but there’s a choice in between but I think that everything is so connected that can’t happen. I really don’t know though, it’s so complicated! There isn’t really a right or wrong answer though, so I can’t imagine your teacher penalizing you as long as you make a strong argument?

I agree about Enjolras and R though, Enjolras would absolutely argue for free will. And Grantaire is so familiar with Greek mythology he would definitely be familiar with people making fools of themselves or running into their own destruction when they try to fight fate, so he would try to argue that Enjolras is being blind and stupidly idealistic

I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help. Good luck on your exam!

hey it’s me again! hope you are having a peachy day🍑💖stupid question: who is rumi? educate me! love, your secret santa

hi! I’m having an ok day, thank you! I’m sick which sucks but basically all of my schoolwork is done for the semester and it was my last day of one of my classes so the professor bought us really good food.

That’s not stupid at all and thanks for being interested!

Rumi was a Persian Muslim Sufi poet in the 13th century who is the bestselling poet in the US today. My paper was about why he’s so appealing to modern Americans. There are a lot of really valid reasons like he was an innovative poet who used a lot of techniques that are popular now and he described what it’s like to be alive really beautifully and his work is full of love and tolerance. Also Sufism is really similar to Transcendentalism which Americans like. I also found though that the person whose Rumi collections really launched him to popularity is kind of controversial because he doesn’t actually do his own translations from the original language and changes a lot of stuff so a lot of the context of Rumi’s culture is lost. So it’s kind of like we want Rumi’s spirituality but not his religion? My paper was ten pages long so I can’t get into it all here, but it’s very interesting and I definitely recommend looking into it. (I would also recommend reading some of his poetry! I didn’t actually read very much believe it or not but the lines I saw in my research were lovely)

hey! how’s your day going? do you have any fun stuff going on? i’m super excited to get to know you, i love your blog -ur secret santa💖

Hi! I’m so glad to hear from you, I’m excited too!

My day has been pretty good. I had creative writing class and we just kind of sat and worked on our stories. I’m mostly done and I’m actually so happy with it. I think it might be the best thing I’ve ever written. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do for the rest of the semester though because the only other clear story ideas I have right now are for an E/R fic and the professor specifically said no fanfiction..

Anyway we watched a movie in my other class today so I didn’t have to listen to the professor lecture which was nice. It’s been a pretty unexciting day. It’s raining which is kind of gross but whatever.

I don’t really have anything fun going on. I have a group project due tomorrow (with my roommate and another person named Zoe, weirdly) and I am really not in the mood to be working on it, and I’ve been procrastinating a massive paper, but once those are out of the way my semester is mostly over so I’ll be able to relax. I’m in a pretty good mood though! I had an amazon delivery and my tv shows have been good 🙂

What about you, how are you doing?
