i believe this is what they call in the biz…a narrative arc

okay but literally the parallels between these pages are GORGEOUS. the centered one on the left and the asymmetrical one on the right suggesting an imbalance and that something is Wrong. the BURST of words vs barely one line of text on the other and bitty being surrounded by his team vs him being completely alone. the lack of words/people gives the second page S P A C E – a literal visual metaphor for the distance and loneliness bitty feels…especially when you put these two side by side. the bright, open background vs the claustrophobic setting of bitty’s room. his stance!!!! one of confidence and assuredness to one of a person who has the world on their shoulders. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL REPRESENTATION OF HOW BITTY PRESENTS HIMSELF VS HOW HE ACTUALLY FEELS AND IM LOSING MY MIND OVER IT.

UM I CANT BE QUIET!!! but Look at how bitty is framed…first by the support beams of the Haus and second by his window. a big, wide area in the first with room to breathe and wave his hands and the second barely even able to contain just himself…a reader literally gets that feeling of constriction, loneliness, and despair JUST from looking at this page and it’s so!! expertly constructed AHHHHHH

Ok so I’m here to talk about how ridiculously talented Bitty is on ice because the fandom forgets sometimes.

•Bitty switched from figure skates to hockey skates. This is SUPER HARD TO DO. (I asked a friend who figure skates competitively about how skating with hockey skates is different. She immediately said that it was extremely hard.)

•Bitty can do twirls in hockey skates. Again VERY HARD due to hockey skates not having a pick.

•Was the captain of his Junior hockey team for two years. He was made captain after TWO YEARS of playing hockey.

•Got an assist in his first College hockey game

•Scored the winning goal in his third game on a College team(also the only goal of that game)

•After that game he was switched from third line to first line.

•Was awarded the John Carlisle award at the end of his freshmen year(the award is given to the player who’s enthusiasm and dedication best shows team spirit)

•Struggled with the fear of getting checked but woke up at 4A.M. so he could get over this fear and stay on the team (yes he grumbles about it a fair bit but he also acknowledges that it helps him)

•He balances being on a varsity team and school fairly well and takes care of his teammates too.

•He does all of this before he’s 20.

In conclusion Eric Bittle is more than just a talented gay baker, he is a strong person who is extremely talented on ice. Thank you for your time.

The other day, audiaphilios in the chat was talking about wanting fic of Coaches Hall and Murray, and I got to thinking about this and it’s related:

Like, you add all this stuff up, and … well, I think what you’re looking at is a tiny school – the kind of school that doesn’t pay its coaches a tremendous amount of money, the kind of school that can’t count on enormous alumni/ae funding to pay for scholarships – which has found itself a pair of coaches who are doing exactly what a school in that position needs to do: start with players that their competition cannot even imagine playing hockey, and train them into the best hockey players the NCAA has ever seen.

Coaches Murray and Hall didn’t pick Bittle’s name out of a hat. They didn’t recruit him for his pecan pies. They saw an incredible natural athlete with a lot of potential to be an asset to their team. And that’s what he is.

#i also think #they recruited him #because of his similarity to kent parson #small fast strategic forwards #they knew jack needed someone who wasn’t going to try to be the star #who focused more on the collaborative aspects of the game #and was as thrilled with an assist as a goal #they recruited bitty f o r  j a c k
